Priest Leveling Guide

The obvious spec when leveling is shadow since most of time you will be soloing and for that you need a damage build, not a healing build. Occasionally, new priests have in mind that they wish to level as a holy priest. Not only does this drastically reduce a priest`s damage output, making leveling slower, but also wastes an insane amount of time. Respec to a healing build once you reach level 70 if you wish.  Alternatively, you could respec to a healing build once lvl 60 but you`ll restrict yourself to solely leveling in instances where groups are often hard to find these days.

Your first 5 talent points should be spent in “spirit tap” which after killing a target that yields experience, increases your spirit by 100% for 15 seconds. Having spirit tap will reduce your downtime while leveling, making it imperative to have. Initially, it won`t seem to do much, but without it you`ll notice a huge difference.

Spend the next 5 talents points into “blackout” and/or “improved power word pain” to reach the spell “mind flay” which causes 75 damage over 3 seconds and slows the targets movement speed by 50% (rank 1). Mind flay is the main spell for any shadow priest whether it be for leveling or raiding so be sure to get it. This spell`s drawback is that it’s a “channeled” spell, meaning it will regularly cause damage and that you must remain stationary while casting or it will cancel. Damage inflicted upon you will also cancel this spell so it`s a good idea to cast power word shield prior to combat as while the shield is present, spell casting won`t be interrupted.

Before progressing further down the shadow tree, spend 5 talent points into “wand specialisation” which increases the damage dealt by wands by 25%, found in the discipline tree. Using your wand is a great way to finish off an enemy on low health and it requires zero mana, meaning spirit regeneration will already be active while running towards your next target. You may wish to also spend 2 talent points in “improved power word fortitude” which will provide you with a little more health.

From this point, spend your talent points as you see fit but ensure you focus mainly on the shadow tree for a faster, more enjoyable leveling experience.
